A Tale of Compassion and Empowerment: How JUWACI Empowered Widows in 2023

Julebrama Women and Children Initiative (JUWACI) is a dynamic organization focusing on health, education, and empowerment initiatives for vulnerable women and children across Nigerian communities.

JUWACI’s Widows Outreach Project unfolded from December 23 to 27, 2023, leaving an indelible mark by reaching a total of 405 widows across various local government areas- 294 widows from Yua Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State, 50 from Gboko LGA (Benue State), and 49 from Olamaboro LGA (Kogi State).The project exemplifies JUWACI’s commitment to holistic empowerment and positive societal impact.

As part of the 2023 Outreach Project , our dedicated Welfare Team, led by Mnena Adatso, and the Executive Director, Mrs. Jennifer Hembafan Alih, embarked on impactful home visits, bringing hope and tangible support to widows facing unique challenges.

The dedicated Welfare Team, led by Mnena Adatso, played a crucial role in implementing these initiatives.

2. Recognition at NKST Yua: JUWACI received an award of appreciation from widows in NKST Yua, recognizing the organization’s continuous support over the past five years.
3. Home Visits and Specialized Support: Home visits by JUWACI’s team identified specific needs, providing individualized support. Notably, financial aid for medical treatments was extended, addressing urgent health concerns. Home visits revealed nuanced challenges, with specific needs identified. The team provided financial aid for medical treatments, offering solace to widows facing health concerns.

In one instance, assistance was provided to a widow diagnosed with glaucoma, by providing glasses and covering the complete cost of her treatment and providing transportation to the hospital in Abuja.

Another instance is the case of a wonderful mother and grandmother whom the welfare team visited in Gboko. During the visits, the Welfare Team noticed she was restless and swiftly acted. Recognizing her immediate health needs, the team arranged for her immediate admission to receive essential medical treatment. This proactive response reflects JUWACI’s commitment to addressing nuanced challenges promptly as well as underscoring JUWACI’s responsiveness to the immediate needs and well-being of the widows.

4. Identification of Vulnerable Cases/ Supporting Self-Sufficiency: A young widow forced into child marriage was identified.

The team discovered a young widow, forced into child marriage, demonstrating JUWACI’s commitment to identifying and uplifting the most vulnerable. Plans are underway to sponsor her in establishing a hairdressing salon, providing a pathway to self-sufficiency for her and her three children.

5. Spreading Joy and Warmth/Christmas Packages Distribution: Mnena Adatso, Mrs. Jennifer Hembafan Alih, and the Welfare Team delivered not only support but also moments of joy during the festive season. Christmas packages, including rice and meat, were distributed, bringing warmth to the homes of these incredible women while making a positive difference in their lives.

Under the umbrella of SES – VC (Sustainable Educational Support for Vulnerable Children), this initiative reflects JUWACI’s unwavering commitment to education as a cornerstone of empowerment. SES – VC represents JUWACI’s Socio-Educational Support initiative designed to empower vulnerable children through educational interventions. As JUWACI continues its journey of impact, The Back to School Project is poised to kick off in January 2024, signaling a new year of opportunities for children who face educational challenges.
