Shocking Statement: Ohanaeze Tells Peter Obi “Igbo Presidency Not Possible Under NDC”
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has issued a strong advisory to former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, urging him to reconsider his 2027 presidential ambition under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a press statement signed by its leadership, the group argued that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) currently operates as a regional political platform with limited national reach and influence.
According to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the party is largely driven by political interests associated with the Ijaw geopolitical bloc, making it difficult for it to serve as a viable platform for a successful nationwide presidential contest.
The group warned that pursuing the presidency under such a structure would make the realization of an Igbo presidency in 2027 “not feasible,” citing the need for a party with broad national acceptance and strong electoral structures across Nigeria.
Ohanaeze stated that any serious presidential ambition must be anchored on a platform with nationwide appeal, organizational strength, and the capacity to mobilize majority support across all geopolitical zones.
It further advised Peter Obi to carefully reassess his political direction, warning that a failed presidential bid could weaken the Southeast’s political leverage and long-term developmental interests.
The statement also referenced discussions within a forum of former Southeast governors, where it was claimed that some political leaders acknowledged the infrastructural efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Southeast and expressed support for his re-election bid as a consensus option.
In a more controversial appeal, the group suggested that aligning with a stronger national platform or supporting an existing administration may better serve the region’s political and developmental interests than pursuing a fragmented opposition strategy.
The statement was signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General, and Chief Thompson Ohia, National Spokesman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
As the 2027 political season gradually takes shape, the statement has already sparked debate across political circles, especially among supporters of Peter Obi, who remain a major force in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

NDC; IGBO PRESIDENCY IS NOT FEASIBLE UNDER A REGIONAL IJAW POLITICAL PARTY IN 2027 – OHANAEZE TELLS PETER OBI
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo sociocultural organization, is compelled to issue this forthright and unambiguous press release. After a thorough and objective assessment, it has become glaringly clear that the newly – formed National Democratic Congress (NDC) is, in reality, a regional political party with strong indications of being driven by the discreet political interests of the IJaw people and nation, under the leadership of its National leader, Senator Seriake Dickson.
We, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, believe it is our duty to convey this unvarnished truth to Mr. Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State. Mr. Obi’s consideration of contesting the 2027 presidential elections under the NDC is a decision that requires careful re – evaluation. The NDC lacks the necessary geographical spread and appears too fragile and weak to withstand the formidable strength of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. It is a hard and bitter truth, but one that must be stated without mincing words: the actualization of an Igbo presidency in 2027 is not feasible under the NDC.
The path to an Igbo presidency demands a political vehicle with national appeal, broad – based support, and the ability to command the confidence of a majority of Nigerians. The NDC, as it stands, does not meet these requirements. It is a regional party, and in the highly competitive and complex Nigerian political landscape, a regional – based party is ill – equipped to secure the presidency.
We urge Mr. Peter Obi to put aside his presidential ambitions in 2027 for the greater good of the Igbo people. Recently, at the inaugural meeting of the Forum of Former Southeast Governors under the leadership of Senator Dave Nweze Umahi in Enugu, a significant resolution was adopted. The governors unanimously appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructural drive in the Southeast and subsequently endorsed President Tinubu’s re – election bid in 2027 as the consensus candidate of the forum.
If Mr. Peter Obi were to contest and lose the 2027 presidential elections to the incumbent President Tinubu, it could have a detrimental impact on the fortunes of the Southeast region under President Tinubu’s administration. In the interest of the Igbo people and the overall development of the Southeast, we earnestly appeal to Mr. Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 election and extend his support to President Tinubu.
