APC Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda Screens Hope Uzodinma for 2027 Imo West Senate Bid
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has reportedly screened Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma ahead of his anticipated bid for the Imo West Senatorial seat in the 2027 National Assembly elections.
Political stakeholders within the ruling party say the move signals the beginning of strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially in Imo State where succession politics and party structure are already gaining momentum.
Governor Uzodinma, who is currently serving his second term as governor, is expected to complete his tenure in January 2028. However, constitutional provisions may compel him to vacate office earlier if he successfully contests and is sworn in as senator representing Imo West, popularly known as Orlu Zone, in June 2027.
Under Nigeria’s constitutional process, National Assembly members-elect are usually inaugurated in June following the general elections. Should Uzodinma emerge victorious and take the oath of office as senator in June 2027, he would be required to resign as governor approximately six to seven months before the official end of his tenure.
In that situation, the Deputy Governor of Imo State would automatically assume office as substantive governor and complete the remainder of the administration’s tenure until January 2028.
The development has already sparked conversations within political circles in Imo State, with analysts suggesting that Uzodinma’s possible transition to the Senate could reshape the state’s political succession battle and influence the balance of power within the APC ahead of 2027.
Party insiders believe the screening exercise demonstrates the APC leadership’s intention to strengthen its hold on Imo West, a politically influential senatorial district that has produced several top political figures in the state.
Neither Governor Uzodinma nor the APC leadership has officially released a detailed statement regarding the reported screening, but supporters of the governor have continued mobilization efforts across the Orlu political zone in anticipation of the 2027 polls.
