The Generation for Societal Change (GSC) , a socio-political group has called for rededication to and promotion of national values as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

This is contained in a statement signed by Okechukwu Nworah, the groups Global Coordinator and made available in Abuja on Monday.

The GSC said Nigeria’s 62nd Independence celebration should be a rededication to and promotion of national values of discipline, integrity, patriotism, dignity of labour, self reliance, social justice and religious tolerance.

“These values are what define us as a great nation.

“These values are more or less the spring from which our individual and collective actions, thoughts, mindsets, beliefs, culture and tradition as a people should source from.

“In the journey towards realising the Nigeria we all desire, embracing these values wholeheartedly is the first step we need to take,” the statement read.

The GSC stated that these values should be allowed to inform the choices of leaders both at the upcoming elections and subsequent ones.

“If the leaders we follow do not align with the values we profess as a nation, our journey towards being the nation we truly desire will be prolonged and more frustrating.”

The group urged that Nigerians should strive to live and choose as leaders, only those who are willing to lead by values.

The GSC said ensuring that younger generation of Nigerians including the unborn, are influenced from early age of development by these values was the way to go.

The group also urged Nigerians home and abroad to join hands and promote these national core values by living and promoting them daily and should choose to vote for values when the time comes.

According to the group, “the Nigeria we all desire is one without distinctions of tribalism or ethnicity, without interference of religion, social status, undertones of human avarice and innate selfishness.”
