At least three persons are feared dead while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries following the derailment of the Warri-Itakpe Train Service near Agbor in Delta State.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, throwing passengers into panic as some coaches reportedly left the tracks during the journey.

Emergency responders, security operatives, medical personnel, and concerned residents quickly mobilised to the scene to rescue trapped passengers and provide urgent medical assistance to the injured.

Eyewitnesses said the derailment caused confusion among passengers, many of whom were forced to evacuate from the affected coaches as rescue efforts got underway.

Although the exact number of casualties is yet to be officially confirmed, preliminary reports indicate that at least three persons may have lost their lives in the accident, while several others suffered injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), alongside other emergency management agencies, were said to have commenced evacuation operations shortly after the incident.

Authorities have also launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the derailment.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Railway Corporation had not released an official statement detailing the cause of the accident or the total number of casualties.

The Warri-Itakpe rail corridor is one of Nigeria’s busiest standard gauge railway routes, connecting communities across Delta, Edo, Kogi, and other parts of the country. The service has become a preferred mode of transportation for many travelers due to its affordability and relative safety.

The latest incident has, however, raised fresh concerns about railway safety and infrastructure maintenance within the country’s transportation sector.
