Senegal Come From Behind To Defeat Sudan, Advance To AFCON Quarter-Finals
Senegal came from behind to defeat Sudan 3-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 encounter at the Grand Stade de Tanger, securing a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Sudan took an early lead in the sixth minute through Aamir Abdallah, who curled a fine long-range effort into the top left corner to surprise the defending champions.
Senegal gradually grew into the game and found the equaliser through Pape Gueye. The Villarreal midfielder latched onto a through pass from Sadio Mane and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner.
Gueye completed his brace in first-half stoppage time, converting Nicolas Jackson’s low cross after an earlier penalty decision in Senegal’s favour was overturned following a VAR review.
Sudan attempted to respond after the break, with Sheddy Barglan forcing a save from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy early in the second half, but the East Africans struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Ibrahim Mbaye sealed the victory for Senegal with 13 minutes remaining, driving the ball into the net at the near post to put the result beyond doubt.
The win extended Senegal’s unbeaten run at the Africa Cup of Nations to 15 matches, comprising 10 wins and five draws since their loss to Algeria in the 2019 final. Only Nigeria and Egypt have recorded longer unbeaten streaks in the tournament’s history.
