Paul Okoye trends after false rape allegation sparks legal threats
Nigerian singer Paul Okoye, one half of the music duo P-Square, became a trending topic on social media this week after online users accused him of sexual misconduct, claims he has strongly denied.
The controversy began when Okoye, known as Rudeboy, celebrated his wife’s 25th birthday. Soon after, a group of feminist commentators on X (formerly Twitter) accused him of “grooming” and infidelity, with two users escalating the claims to suggest rape and abuse involving a housemaid.

One of the accounts behind the allegations has since deactivated, while others have faced backlash over past posts where they made similar accusations against celebrities including footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and singer Davido.
Okoye has vowed to pursue legal action, saying he would “deal with” those spreading false allegations. Supporters of the singer argue the claims are unfounded, while feminist groups online are rallying behind the accusers, citing a history of dismissing women’s voices in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
In 2022, Okoye’s ex-wife, Anita, cited infidelity with a domestic staff member in divorce filings, though no allegations of rape were raised at the time.
The case highlights growing tensions on Nigerian social media over issues of gender activism, celebrity accountability and false accusations.
