Arsenal Grind Out 2-1 Win Over 10-Man Chelsea to Stretch Premier League Lead
Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea on Sunday, capitalising on set-piece dominance and late defensive resilience.
The Gunners took the lead in the 21st minute when defender William Saliba powered home a header from a pinpoint corner delivered by Bukayo Saka. The well-worked routine marked Arsenal’s 16th goal from a corner this season, underlining their threat from dead-ball situations.
Chelsea responded just before halftime, drawing level in fortunate fashion. A dangerous cross from Reece James caused panic in the Arsenal box, and defender Piero Hincapié inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to make it 1-1 at the break.
Arsenal regained control in the second half and found the decisive goal in the 66th minute. Declan Rice whipped in a teasing delivery that was met by Jurrien Timber, who made no mistake from close range to restore the hosts’ advantage.
Moments later, Chelsea’s hopes of mounting another comeback were dealt a major blow when winger Pedro Neto received his second yellow card of the match, reducing the Blues to 10 men for the closing stages.
Despite their numerical advantage, Arsenal were forced to withstand late pressure, with goalkeeper David Raya producing crucial saves to deny Chelsea an equaliser and secure all three points.
The victory extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run against Chelsea to 11 matches and moves them five points clear of defending champions Manchester City with nine games remaining in the season.
