A shocking incident occurred in Abuja where a man pulled out a gun during a confrontation with Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).

The viral video shows the man, visibly angry, brandishing the weapon, causing panic among bystanders. The cause of the altercation is unclear, but it’s believed to have started when the VIO tried to impound the man’s car.

The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about public safety and the increasing rate of violent encounters involving civilians and enforcement officials. Authorities are yet to release an official statement or confirm if any arrests have been made .

There was panic at the federal secretariat in Abuja on Monday morning after a section of the office of the head of service of the federation caught fire.

Eyewitnesses said the fire was first noticed at about 8:20am. Social media footage showed plumes of black smoke billowing from the affected section of the building.

The incident occurred at Section C of the building within the federal secretariat complex.

Staff members were seen evacuating the area after emergency responders had been alerted.

The media department of the office of the head of service confirmed the incident.

The office said the outbreak was limited to Section C of the building.

Officials said emergency responders were already working to contain the fire.

“The fire outbreak is limited to Section C of the building and is currently being attended to by emergency officials,” the office said.

The cause of the fire had yet to be disclosed at the time of filing this report.

King Mitchy had earlier gone viral after allegedly pretending to drink toxic bleach in response to accusations made by VeryDarkMan over what he described as “shady dealings.” The incident triggered backlash and concern across various platforms.

In an unexpected twist, VeryDarkMan appeared to fake his own death, organizing what looked like a full burial ceremony complete with a casket, mourners dressed in colorful attire, and dramatic scenes captured on video. Clips circulating online showed his close associate, Okokowa Ogaga Sakpaide, popularly known as Kokopee, tightly embracing the coffin while chants filled the air.

The staged burial, reportedly held in Abuja, quickly drew mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media. While some users posted “RIP” messages before realizing it was a stunt, many others criticized the move as attention-seeking and insensitive.

Several commentators described the act as a “Nollywood-style” publicity stunt, accusing both influencers of escalating their feud for clout and online engagement. Others expressed concern over the normalization of extreme theatrics for social media relevance.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the results of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections held on Saturday, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning five out of the six councils.

Results from polling units across the six area councils were uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) hours after the elections were conducted.

The elections recorded notably low voter turnout in several polling units, particularly in parts of Abuja city.

This marks the first election conducted under the newly amended Electoral Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on February 18. It is also the second election supervised by the new INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, who assumed office on October 23, 2025. His first election in office was the November 2025 Anambra State governorship poll.

Gwagwalada Area Council — PDP Wins

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mohammed Kasim, emerged winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election.

INEC Returning Officer Philip Akpen announced the result on Sunday, February 22, stating that Kasim secured 22,165 votes to defeat Yahaya Shehu of the APC, who polled 17,788 votes.

Akpen described the election as peaceful and smoothly conducted.

Joshua Ishaku of the APC won the Bwari Area Council chairmanship election with 18,466 votes.

The Returning Officer, Professor Mohammed Nurudeen, announced the result on Sunday in Bwari.

Kwali Area Council — APC Wins

Daniel Nuhu of the APC won the Kwali Area Council election with 16,656 votes, defeating PDP candidate Haruna Pai, who secured 8,467 votes.

Umar Abdullahi of the APC was declared winner of the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election.

Kuje Area Council — APC Wins

Danjuma Samuel of the APC emerged winner of the Kuje Area Council chairmanship election.

The Returning Officer, Professor Nkiruka Odoh, announced the results after collation at the INEC office in Kuje.

Samuel polled 17,269 votes, defeating Zakwoyi Danlami of the PDP, who secured 15,824 votes.

APGA recorded 4,305 votes in the contest.

Overall Outcome

Out of the six area councils in the FCT:

• APC won five councils — AMAC, Bwari, Kwali, Abaji, and Kuje.
• PDP won one council — Gwagwalada.

The elections were generally described as peaceful but were marked by low voter participation across several parts of the capital territory.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he did not impose a movement restriction in Abuja for the Area Council elections without the approval of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike’s reaction follows criticism from the Senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe, who faulted the directive and described it as unacceptable in a democratic society.

Speaking after monitoring the FCT polls in areas including Garki, Karu, Karshi, Wasa, Apo, and Ketti, Wike dismissed the allegation that he acted unilaterally.

“It is unfortunate, I thought as a Senator she should be able to read. I never imposed a curfew on my own. I said with the approval of Mr. President,” the minister said.

Work-Free Day and Movement Restriction

In a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday, Wike had declared Friday a work-free day in preparation for the council elections.

He also announced a restriction on human and vehicular movement across the FCT from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 p.m. on Saturday to ensure smooth conduct of the polls.

However, Kingibe, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, strongly criticised the decision, describing it as executive overreach.

“The people of the FCT are not subjects under a dictatorship. They are citizens of a democratic republic. Any sweeping restriction on their movement and livelihoods must be justified by compelling evidence, subjected to scrutiny, and carried out with transparency,” she said.

While acknowledging the importance of maintaining law and order, the lawmaker insisted that security concerns should not serve as a blanket justification for what she termed an affront to constitutional rights.

Wike Declines Prolonged Dispute

Responding, Wike said he would not join issues with the senator.

“When you hear someone’s speech, why not take time to listen to what was said? She has her problem, I don’t want to join issues,” he said.

He added that the outcome of the election would ultimately speak for itself once results are released.

Low Turnout but Peaceful Conduct

On the conduct of the election, the minister observed that voter turnout was relatively low, particularly in the city centre.

Despite this, he commended residents for their peaceful participation and praised officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for their professionalism.

Wike also lauded INEC’s deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), describing it as a critical tool in ensuring credible elections.

According to the minister, reports available to him indicated that no violence had been recorded as of the time of his assessment. He urged residents of the FCT to remain orderly until the conclusion of the electoral process.
