Three Police Officers Detained Over Suspect’s Death in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command has taken three of its officers into custody following the alleged killing of a theft suspect.
In a statement released on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, said the incident occurred after a complaint was made regarding stolen trailer truck rims at the Jega Divisional Police Headquarters.
The suspect, Abubakar Auwal, was arrested on April 15 in connection to the case. However, on April 16 around 6 a.m., he reportedly collapsed while in detention. He was quickly taken to the General Hospital in Jega for medical attention but passed away later that night at about 10 p.m.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, ordered the case be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.
The three officers implicated are currently being held at the SCID for further inquiries. Additionally, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Jega has been issued a query and redeployed.
Abubakar stressed the Command’s dedication to maintaining professional conduct and ethical standards in policing. He assured that the misconduct of a few would not tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force and emphasized that disciplinary action is always taken to promote justice and accountability.
He also reiterated the force’s commitment to discipline, integrity, and building public trust.
