Heavy Rain Causes Widespread Flooding in Lagos, 3rd Mainland Bridge Affected
A heavy downpour that started around 3 am on Wednesday has caused severe flooding in several areas of Lagos, including major entrances leading to the Third Mainland Bridge. The flood has submerged cars, stranded commuters, and disrupted daily life, causing inconvenience, hardship, and economic losses.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, attributed the flooding near the Third Mainland Bridge to a combination of heavy rain, long downpour duration, and high lagoon water levels. He assured residents that the flood would subside once the rains cease and the lagoon levels normalize.
Wahab also advised residents in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground to protect lives and properties, emphasizing the danger of driving through flooded areas. He warned that even a foot of flowing water during high tide could sweep away vehicles.

The state government has embarked on a comprehensive yearlong maintenance and cleaning program for primary and secondary drainage systems to manage runoff effectively. Residents were encouraged to maintain cleanliness around their properties and refrain from dumping refuse into drains.
The flood has affected various roads and neighborhoods, including Iyana-Oworo-Alapomeji, Ketu-Alapere, Oshodi-Mafoluku, Aboru, Iyana ipaja, Iyana Iba, Isheri/Idimu-LASU, Ijegun-Abaranje, Ikate, Egbeda-Akowonjo, Jakande Estate, Ogba, Okota, and Lekki-Ajah axis.
Residents have taken to social media to call for government intervention, urging prompt action to mitigate the crisis, restore normalcy to the affected areas, and prevent future occurrences.
