The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The minister extended greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging Nigerians to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He stressed that compassion, humility and service were values Nigeria needed at this time, encouraging all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to embrace them.

FG Calls for Prayers for Nigeria

Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, stability and national cohesion, noting that maintaining national unity was a collective responsibility.

He called on Muslims and other Nigerians celebrating the occasion to do so with restraint and mutual respect.

The minister further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring that peace is maintained across the country.

The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, will be observed as a nationwide public holiday in honour of Eid ul Mawlid, with workers expected to resume normal activities after the holiday.

The Federal Government wished the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid, while calling on citizens to use the celebration to promote tolerance, peaceful coexistence and national unity.
