ECOWAS to Relocate Institutions from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Amid Withdrawal
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to relocate its institutions from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger following the three Sahelian nations’ decision to withdraw from the regional bloc.
According to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, ECOWAS is exploring options to mitigate disruptions caused by the exit. The regional bloc’s commission will present plans addressing the withdrawal process, program suspensions, and challenges related to the free movement of people, goods, and services.

The decision comes after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger cited “inhumane sanctions” from ECOWAS as the reason for their departure following a series of coups in the region.
ECOWAS remains committed to regional integration, with member states urged to prioritize cooperation and institutional renewal.
The bloc’s legacy and stability are expected to be maintained despite the challenges posed by the withdrawal.
The development follows an ECOWAS meeting in Accra, Ghana, where the regional bloc discussed the implications of the three nations’ exit and potential relocation of institutions.
