Burkina Faso Releases Detained Nigerian Air Force Aircraft, 11 Personnel After Diplomatic Talks
Burkina Faso has released a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 aircraft and the 11 personnel onboard following high-level diplomatic engagements between both countries.
A Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, met with Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, to address the detention of the military aircraft and its crew. The talks resulted in the immediate release of the aircraft and all 11 Nigerian Air Force personnel.
After the resolution, Ambassador Tuggar met with the freed personnel to confirm their well-being before their departure. The delegation and the Air Force members are now en route back to Nigeria.

Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to international aviation protocols and stressed its respect for Burkina Faso’s sovereignty. The Federal Government also distanced itself from any unsubstantiated claims of maltreatment of the detained personnel.
Both Nigerian and Burkinabè authorities acknowledged their shared security challenges in the region and emphasised the importance of maintaining fraternal and cooperative relations between the two countries.
The incident occurred on December 8, 2025, when the Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft made an emergency landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, due to a technical fault. Burkina Faso authorities subsequently detained the aircraft and its crew, citing alleged unauthorised entry into the country’s airspace.
Observers say the swift diplomatic resolution highlights the effectiveness of dialogue in de-escalating potential regional disputes and preserving bilateral relations in West Africa.
