Cooking Gas Shortage Hits Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja as 12.5kg Cylinder Price Soars to ₦25,000
Households across Lagos, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are facing long queues at filling stations as a fresh shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, bites harder.
The scarcity, which began late last week, has driven prices sharply upward, with the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder soaring to about ₦25,000 up from ₦17,500 just a week ago.
Residents lamented the sudden spike, noting that many gas outlets have run out of stock, while others are rationing supply. “It’s frustrating; I had to visit three stations before finding gas, and the price has more than doubled,” said a Lagos resident, Mrs. Amaka Obi.
Industry sources attribute the shortage to supply disruptions and rising import costs, as Nigeria still relies heavily on imported LPG to meet domestic demand. Some dealers also blamed foreign exchange volatility and high logistics expenses for the hike.
Analysts warn that if the supply situation does not improve soon, the rising cost of cooking gas could further worsen the cost of living for millions of households already battling inflation.
