Everton have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026/27 Carabao Cup after defeating defending champions Newcastle United 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees produced an impressive performance on Wednesday night to eliminate the Magpies, who lifted the competition trophy during the 2024/25 season.

Both teams started brightly, but neither could create a clear-cut opportunity during the opening exchanges of the encounter.

Everton eventually broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark through James Garner, who produced a superb curling effort into the bottom corner to give the home side the advantage.

The hosts doubled their lead just before half-time when Hayden Hackney finished confidently from a Thierno Barry cross.

The goal was Hackney’s first for Everton since completing his summer move from Middlesbrough.

Everton continued their impressive display after the restart, with Barry getting on the scoresheet to extend the advantage to 3-0.

The striker controlled the ball before producing a composed finish, recording his fourth goal in this season’s Carabao Cup campaign.

Newcastle attempted to fight back and managed to score a consolation goal late in the encounter through defender Dan Burn, who headed home.

However, the goal proved insufficient to inspire a comeback as Everton held on to secure a convincing 3-1 victory.

The closing stages witnessed a feisty contest as both sides battled for control, but Everton successfully protected their advantage to book their place in the last eight.

Everton to Face Fleetwood Town in Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

Following their victory over Newcastle, Everton will travel to face Fleetwood Town in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Fleetwood secured one of the biggest surprises of this season’s Carabao Cup by eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday.

The League One side will now have another opportunity to produce a memorable cup upset when they welcome Everton.

For Everton, the objective will be to avoid the fate that befell Arsenal and continue their pursuit of silverware.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s elimination means they have surrendered their Carabao Cup crown, with their hopes of defending the title coming to an end in the fourth round.

Everton will now turn their attention to the quarter-final clash as they look to move closer to lifting the competition trophy.
