The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Ibobuminaten Oweifa, over the alleged attempted murder of a young boy, Godgift Biko, who was reportedly set ablaze after being accused of stealing pieces of wood in Okodi Community, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage on social media, reportedly occurred after the victim had already admitted to taking the wood, apologized for his actions, and received punishment from members of the community.

According to the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, the suspect allegedly tied the victim with wire, poured fuel on him, and set him on fire over the accusation of wood theft. The victim was rescued by residents and rushed to a clinic in Okodi Community, where he received first aid treatment.

Police said the Divisional Police Officer swiftly arrested the suspect and commenced an investigation into the incident.

The command condemned acts of jungle justice, stressing that criminal allegations should always be reported to law enforcement authorities rather than handled through violence.

“The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the police said, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring justice is served.

The incident has drawn condemnation from many Nigerians and human rights advocates, who have called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found culpable.

Police urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected crimes through appropriate legal channels.
