Group Rebrands ‘Obidient Movement’, Expels Peter Obi, Yunusa Tanko Ahead of 2027 Elections
A group claiming ownership of the popular #Obidient Movement has announced a major restructuring of the organisation, including the expulsion of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his close associate, Yunusa Tanko.
The announcement was made on Thursday during a press briefing in Abuja, where the group declared the immediate disbandment of the existing structure linked to Obi and his supporters following the 2023 general elections.
According to the organisation, all individuals appointed under what it described as an “unauthorised leadership structure” have been removed with immediate effect.
Allegations of misuse and internal crisis
Speaking at the briefing, the group accused Obi and his allies of allegedly turning the movement into what it called a platform for “political prostitution” and personal enrichment, claims that have yet to be independently verified.
The group further stated that the movement has been officially rebranded from “#Obidient Movement” to “#OBEDIENT Movement,” insisting the change was necessary to distance itself from the former leadership and its political affiliations.
No endorsement for 2027 elections.
The International Coordinator of the rebranded group, Barry Avotu Johnson, stated that the organisation has not adopted any presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections and has also severed all ties with the Labour Party.
The development marks a significant internal rift within one of Nigeria’s most recognisable political support movements in recent years.
