Champions League Matchday 7: Liverpool Down Marseille as Chelsea, Barcelona, Bayern, Juventus All Win
The second night of UEFA Champions League Matchday 7 action was completed on Wednesday, January 21, with Europe’s heavyweights largely taking care of business after a shock-filled Tuesday that included Manchester City’s defeat to Bodø/Glimt.
Unlike the opening day, Wednesday’s fixtures were more predictable, though they still delivered goals, drama, and results that could shape qualification ahead of the final league-phase matchday.
Liverpool produced one of their most convincing performances of the campaign, cruising to a 3–0 away victory over Olympique Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome. The Reds dominated proceedings in one of Europe’s most hostile environments, showing renewed confidence as they strengthened their position in the standings.
Bayern Munich also enjoyed a solid evening, defeating Union Saint-Gilloise 2–0 despite disciplinary challenges. Harry Kane found the net before later missing a penalty, but the German champions remained composed to secure all three points.
Barcelona impressed in Prague, beating Slavia Praha 4–2 in an open and entertaining encounter. Hansi Flick’s side showcased their attacking quality but will still need a win in their final home match against Copenhagen to secure a top-eight finish in the league phase.
Juventus maintained their strong European form with a comfortable 2–0 win over Benfica in Turin. Goals from Khéphren Thuram and Weston McKennie sealed the result, leaving José Mourinho’s Benfica facing a must-win final match against Real Madrid to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.
In England, Newcastle United continued their impressive Champions League run with a commanding 3–0 home victory over PSV, while Chelsea edged past Pafos 1–0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to a late strike from Moisés Caicedo.
One of the night’s biggest surprises came in Italy, where Atalanta suffered a 3–2 home defeat to Athletic Club. The result significantly reshapes the race for the top-eight automatic qualification spots and the playoff places heading into the final round of matches.
Elsewhere, Qarabag produced a thrilling performance to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 3–2, while Galatasaray and Atlético Madrid played out a 1–1 draw.
With one league-phase matchday remaining, qualification battles are intensifying, and several top sides still have work to do to secure safe passage to the knockout rounds.
