Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described his side’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion as a “big lesson” after the defending Premier League champions suffered their first league loss of the season.

Arsenal arrived at the Amex Stadium on Saturday with an impressive record, having won their opening four Premier League matches and seven consecutive games in all competitions.

However, that run came to an emphatic end as Brighton produced a dominant performance to beat the champions 3-0 and move up to third place in the Premier League table.

The defeat was Arsenal’s heaviest in a season in which they entered the campaign as defending top-flight champions.

Arteta admitted afterwards that Brighton deserved the victory and said Arsenal had fallen short in several fundamental areas of their game.

“It’s a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level,” Arteta said after the match.

Arsenal dominated in key battles

The Arsenal manager pointed to Brighton’s superior intensity and ability to win contested balls as major reasons for the defeat.

Arteta said Brighton had “another bite” in the match, particularly when possession was contested.

“There are a lot of moments when the ball is 50-50 and it changes hands and most of the time it was for them,” he said.

The Arsenal boss also acknowledged that technical errors contributed to his side’s problems.

“Sometimes there were some technical errors very much involved that opened us up in a really difficult way, but that’s something to learn,” Arteta added.

The defeat exposed unusual weaknesses in an Arsenal side that had built much of its recent success around defensive organisation, midfield control and physical competitiveness.

Brighton put Arsenal under relentless pressure

Brighton were aggressive from the opening stages and repeatedly disrupted Arsenal’s attempts to build attacks.

The hosts went into half-time with a 2-0 advantage before adding a third goal after the break to complete a convincing victory.

According to former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, Brighton could have scored even more.

“They absolutely battered Arsenal,” Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

He praised Brighton’s organisation, fitness and willingness to press Arsenal without allowing the champions sufficient time and space to dictate the game.

Shearer also credited Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler for the team’s coordinated pressing approach.

Arsenal’s defensive record exposed

The result was particularly surprising given Arsenal’s defensive record.

The Gunners conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League last season and had allowed just one goal across their opening four league matches this campaign.

Against Brighton, however, they conceded three times.

Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal had been far below the level expected of them.

The manager said there was uncertainty in defence, a loss of control in midfield and insufficient creativity in attack.

Arsenal’s comeback problem

Brighton’s two-goal advantage at half-time created a difficult situation for Arsenal.

The Gunners have not recovered to win a Premier League match after being 2-0 down at half-time since March 2008, when they came from behind to defeat Bolton Wanderers.

Although Arsenal attempted to respond after the interval, Brighton remained in control and eventually extended their lead to 3-0.

Arteta refuses to dismiss Arsenal’s strong start

Despite the heavy defeat, Arteta stressed that the result should not erase the progress Arsenal had made during the opening weeks of the season.

The Gunners had won seven consecutive matches in all competitions before the Brighton defeat, while several members of the squad had joined pre-season preparations later than usual after the World Cup.

Arteta said the team’s performances during the previous six or seven weeks had been “remarkable”.

However, he insisted the Brighton match had demonstrated the level required to compete consistently at the top of English football.

“This is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level,” he said.

Brighton continue impressive scoring form

The victory also extended Brighton’s impressive attacking form.

The Seagulls entered the match as the Premier League’s top scorers with 16 goals and had scored eight times during the preceding week.

Their three goals against Arsenal further underlined their attacking efficiency.

For Arsenal, the defeat provides Arteta and his players with an opportunity to address the weaknesses exposed by Brighton before the Premier League campaign resumes.

Former Premier League defender Curtis Davies described the result as potentially a “blip” for Arsenal given their strong start to the season.

However, he also highlighted the extent of the performance, saying Arsenal’s defence was far below its usual standard and that the team failed to create enough attacking danger.

“They didn’t lay a glove on Brighton, and didn’t make anything of their attacking situations,” Davies said.

With the international break now providing time for reflection, Arsenal will have to respond when Premier League action resumes.

The Brighton defeat has not erased their strong start, but it has provided Arteta with exactly the kind of test he described as a “big lesson” for the defending champions.
