Nigeria’s media industry is in mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old broadcast journalist with Arise News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.

Fondly known as Sommie by colleagues and friends, Maduagwu was born on December 26, 1995. She had quickly established herself as a respected anchor, reporter, and producer, admired for her eloquence, professionalism, and passion for storytelling. Trained as a lawyer, she brought intellectual depth and analytical rigour into her broadcast career.

Arise News confirmed her death in a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management.

“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague… Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.

“Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”

Her colleagues described her as warm, energetic, and deeply committed to journalism, while tributes poured in on social media from fellow journalists, viewers, and members of the legal community.

Security sources confirmed that police have opened an investigation into the incident, which has sparked renewed concern about rising insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.
