BONA NAIJAMinister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, stating that he did not come from a poor background, unlike his political rival.
Wike made the remarks during a live interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, where he addressed allegations of corruption and ostentatious living leveled against him by Amaechi.
“I have a Rolls-Royce; nobody gave it to me. I bought it for myself. I didn’t come from the same background as Rotimi Amaechi. As a student, I was using a Mercedes-Benz,” Wike said.
The minister stressed that his wealth was not acquired through corruption, adding that he comes from a well-off family.
“My father was the manager of so many companies. I come from a rich background, but not too rich like the Dangotes,” he added.
The comments came in response to Amaechi’s earlier jab, where he accused Wike of owning a luxury car as evidence of corruption. Wike, however, dismissed the claims, asserting that his lifestyle was not funded by public resources but rather his family’s affluence.
The verbal exchange marks yet another escalation in the long-running political rivalry between the two former governors of Rivers State, who have consistently clashed both politically and personally over the years.
