Rivers Governor Fubara Dumps PDP, Joins APC to Back President Tinubu
In a major political twist shaking Nigeria’s South-South, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation and political tension in the oil-rich state.
Fubara said his dramatic move was fueled by the PDP’s failure to stand by him during some of the most turbulent moments of his administration — including the fierce power tussle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, which spiralled into an impeachment plot, the partial demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and even the state of emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in March.
According to the governor, those crises exposed deep cracks within the PDP and left him “politically abandoned” at a time when loyalty mattered most.
With his switch, Fubara becomes Rivers State’s first APC governor since 1999, marking a historic shift in a state long considered a PDP stronghold.
Political observers believe the defection is a big win for the Tinubu-led APC, boosting the party’s presence in the South-South and potentially reshaping calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move also signals a wave of realignments as political players reposition for national influence.
Fubara is expected to formally present his new political structure to the APC leadership in the coming days, as the ruling party celebrates what many insiders describe as a “strategic and timely catch.”
