Ohanaeze Warns Jos Killings, INEC Crisis Could Pull Trump Back Into Nigeria Affairs
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has cautioned that recent security challenges and political tensions in Nigeria could attract renewed attention from the United States, particularly former U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
In its Easter message to Christians, especially Ndigbo, the group urged patience amid current economic hardship, linking the rising cost of petroleum products to the ongoing geopolitical crisis triggered by the reported U.S.-Israel military confrontation with Iran.
Ohanaeze noted that the global ripple effects of the conflict have contributed to increased fuel prices and economic strain in Nigeria.
The organisation strongly condemned the recent Palm Sunday attacks and killings in Jos, describing them as tragic and unacceptable.
While commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his condolence visit to victims in Plateau State, Ohanaeze called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts in tackling renewed insecurity in the northern region.
The group expressed confidence in the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, and Defence Minister Bello Matawalle, urging them to take decisive action to restore peace.
Ohanaeze also addressed the ongoing leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), advising opposition figures, including former Senate President David Mark, to seek redress through the judiciary rather than involving foreign governments.
The organisation stressed that Nigeria’s Supreme Court remains the appropriate channel for resolving internal political disputes.
The group warned that the combination of the Jos killings, tensions surrounding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and actions by political actors could draw renewed scrutiny from the United States.
It cautioned that Nigeria should avoid actions capable of triggering foreign intervention, referencing previous U.S. reactions to security developments in the country.
Ohanaeze called on Ndigbo to continue supporting the current administration and maintain unity during the Easter celebrations. It also welcomed Igbos travelling home for the festivities, encouraging peaceful and joyful celebrations across communities.
