FRSC Blames Speeding, Dangerous Overtaking for Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the fatal road traffic crash involving Nigerian-British boxing champion Anthony Joshua to excessive speed and dangerous overtaking.
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, at about 12 noon along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State. It involved a Lexus Jeep conveying Anthony Joshua and a stationary commercial truck parked by the roadside.
In a statement released on Monday, the FRSC said five adult males were involved in the crash. Two persons lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others, including Anthony Joshua, survived.

According to the Corps, Joshua was rescued alive with minor injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed medical facility.
The FRSC disclosed that its operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving the distress call, where they immediately commenced rescue operations, evacuated victims, managed traffic, and prevented further accidents on the busy highway.
“The injured victim was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue, Sagamu,” the statement said. It added that the Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has taken over the case for further investigation.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC indicated that the Lexus Jeep was suspected to be speeding and lost control while attempting to overtake, before crashing into the stationary truck.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery.
Mohammed also used the incident to warn motorists against speeding and wrongful overtaking, especially on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. He urged road users to prioritise safety, particularly during the festive season, when traffic volume is usually high.
The crash has once again drawn attention to recurring road safety concerns on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, which continues to record fatal accidents despite ongoing safety campaigns and enforcement efforts by authorities.
