BREAKING: Two Die as Anthony Joshua Survives Road Accident in Ogun State
Abeokuta, Nigeria — Nigerian-British boxing champion and former world heavyweight titleholder Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road accident in Ogun State on Monday, leaving two people dead, according to multiple reports.
The crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near the Sagamu/Makun axis, a section of the highway notorious for heavy traffic and accidents. Reports indicate that the vehicle conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck on the expressway .
Emergency responders confirmed that two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, while Joshua survived the crash. The boxer was said to have sustained minor injuries and was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Sources familiar with the incident said Joshua was not driving at the time of the accident .
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident. Traffic was temporarily disrupted as rescue operations and preliminary investigations were carried out. Authorities are yet to issue a full statement on the cause of the crash, but investigations are ongoing .
Anthony Joshua, 36, is one of the most successful heavyweight boxers of his generation and has strong personal ties to Nigeria through his parents. News of the accident has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with fans and public figures expressing condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the boxer a speedy recovery .
The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways in Nigeria, particularly the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which records frequent fatal crashes despite ongoing rehabilitation works.
