The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has approved the appointment of Mr. Ezekiel Gomos, OFR, as the new Director-General of the Forum’s Secretariat, marking a major step in strengthening regional collaboration across the 19 northern states.

The appointment was announced under the leadership of the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, who said the decision reflects the Forum’s renewed commitment to building a more effective, results-driven institution capable of tackling the North’s most pressing challenges.

According to the Forum, the creation of the Director-General’s office and the selection of Mr. Gomos is part of a broader effort to upgrade the Secretariat into a central hub for policy coordination, collective action, and long-term development planning across the region.

Mr. Gomos, a former Secretary to the Government of Plateau State, comes into the role with decades of high-level experience in public service, governance reforms, private-sector development, and human capital advancement. He is widely regarded as one of Northern Nigeria’s leading development economists and policy strategists.

Over the years, he has held senior positions in notable institutions, including the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). He also served as Lead Consultant and Head of Faculty at the Jos Business School (JBS), a centre known for training entrepreneurs, leaders and policymakers.

For nearly 20 years, Mr. Gomos has been a respected resource person at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, where he has contributed to shaping strategic thinking and national development policies among senior government and military leaders.

He holds graduate and postgraduate degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the University of East Anglia, UK. His impressive academic and professional profile includes prestigious international recognitions such as the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship (University of Minnesota), the British Chevening Scholarship, and the UNDP Fellowship at the ILO Training Centre in Turin, Italy.

He has also completed high-level executive education programmes at the Harvard Kennedy School, University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and Durham University Business School.

Presenting his appointment letter, Governor Inuwa Yahaya charged the new Director-General to deploy his extensive expertise in strategic leadership, institutional development, and policy management to transform the NSGF Secretariat into a more robust platform for:

• collective security coordination
• regional economic cooperation
• coherent policy responses
• long-term sustainable development

He expressed confidence that Mr. Gomos’ appointment would usher in a new era of deeper collaboration, improved coordination, and more effective regional solutions to the critical issues facing Northern Nigeria.

With this appointment, stakeholders believe the Northern Governors’ Forum is taking a decisive step toward building stronger institutions capable of driving unity, economic growth, and stability across the region.
