Wilfred Ndidi Named Super Eagles Captain, Promises Unity Ahead of AFCON 2025
Wilfred Ndidi has been appointed captain of the Super Eagles, stepping into the leadership role as Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The Beşiktaş midfielder was unveiled on Friday, with the Super Eagles’ official social media handle confirming the appointment and quoting Ndidi as describing the honour as “everything” to him at a crucial moment for the national team.
Ndidi’s first major task as captain will be leading the three-time African champions at AFCON 2025, where Nigeria will be aiming to reclaim continental glory after falling short in recent editions.
Speaking to the Super Eagles media team, the former Leicester City star emphasised the importance of unity within the squad, noting that success in Morocco would depend on collective effort both on and off the pitch.

“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” Ndidi said. “I’ve had conversations with some of the senior players to make them understand why we’re here. We also need the support of the coaching crew and staff. We’re all in this together.”
Ndidi’s appointment follows the retirement of former captain Ahmed Musa and the unexpected exit of stand-in skipper William Troost-Ekong from international football. Musa had not featured regularly for the Super Eagles in recent months, while Troost-Ekong announced his retirement shortly after being named in Nigeria’s preliminary squad for AFCON 2025.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group C of the tournament alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, with their opening match scheduled for December 23.
With Ndidi now wearing the armband, the Super Eagles will be hoping his experience, leadership and calm presence in midfield translate into cohesion and confidence as they chase a fourth AFCON title in Morocco.
