Rwandan: Kagame sworn in for fourth term as president, extending reign to 31 years
Kigali, Rwanda – President Paul Kagame was sworn in for a fourth term as Rwandan president on Sunday, August 11, 2024, extending his rule to 31 years. The inauguration ceremony was attended by African leaders and dignitaries.
Kagame, 66, took the oath of office administered by Chief Justice Faustin Ntezilyayo, promising to not use his powers for personal interests. He also invited legal consequences if he fails to honor his oath, saying “Should I fail to honour this oath, may I be subjected to the rigours of the law.”

The president’s fourth term follows his victory in the July 15 election, where he won 99% of votes, defeating two opposition candidates, Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana. Six other candidates were disqualified from contesting the election.
Kagame has been credited with spearheading Rwanda’s economic recovery and growth since the 1994 genocide, which claimed over 800,000 lives. However, his presidency has also been marred by criticism for repressing political opposition and alleged human rights abuses.
As Kagame begins his fourth term, attention will be focused on his leadership and the future of Rwanda. Will he continue to prioritize economic growth, or will he address the concerns of his critics? Only time will tell.
