Portugal wrapped up their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly in Leiria, but the night belonged as much to Cristiano Ronaldo’s struggles as it did to the Selecao’s win.

The Portuguese captain, preparing for a record-equalling sixth FIFA World Cup appearance, endured a frustrating evening in front of goal, missing several clear-cut chances before being substituted after 65 minutes.

Despite the victory, questions remain over Ronaldo’s sharpness heading into the tournament after a performance that lacked the clinical finishing that has defined his legendary career.

Ronaldo Misfires as Portugal Dominate Early

Portugal started brightly and nearly took the lead through Ronaldo in the ninth minute after he was played through by Nelson Semedo. However, the 41-year-old dragged his effort wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The veteran striker’s frustration was evident throughout the match as he squandered another excellent opportunity from close range, sending a left-footed effort high into the stands.

Portugal eventually found the breakthrough in the 23rd minute when Pedro Neto finished off a well-worked attacking move to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Akor Adams Draws Nigeria Level

Nigeria responded positively despite missing several key players, including Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

The Super Eagles equalised just before halftime through Akor Adams, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to silence the home crowd and send both sides into the break level at 1-1.

Nigeria’s resilience caused problems for the European giants, with the visitors proving difficult to break down for long periods of the contest.

Conceicao Delivers Winning Goal

With the match seemingly heading for a draw, substitute Francisco Conceicao stepped up to make the difference.

The winger cut in from the right flank in the 75th minute before curling a superb effort into the far corner beyond the Nigerian goalkeeper to restore Portugal’s lead.

The goal ultimately proved decisive as Roberto Martinez’s side secured their second consecutive 2-1 friendly victory ahead of the World Cup.

Martinez Defends Ronaldo

Following the match, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez defended his decision to keep Ronaldo on the pitch longer than most of his teammates.

While the Portuguese manager made eight changes at halftime, Ronaldo remained on the field as part of a fitness plan designed to prepare him for the demands of the tournament.

“The plan we had for Cristiano was for him to play either 45 or 60 minutes. The important thing is to work on the individual aspect and ensure the team finishes stronger than it starts,” Martinez said.

“We are now much better prepared.”

Focus Shifts to World Cup Campaign

Portugal will now turn their attention to the FIFA World Cup in North America, where they have been drawn in Group K alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan, and DR Congo.

The 2016 European champions begin their campaign against DR Congo on June 17.

For Nigeria, despite failing to qualify for the tournament, the performance offered encouraging signs against one of Europe’s strongest teams and demonstrated the depth of talent available to the Super Eagles moving forward.
