LIVE UPDATE: DR Congo Shock England with Early Goal in FIFA World Cup Round of 32

The Democratic Republic of the Congo have made a dream start against England, taking an early 1-0 lead in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash at Atlanta Stadium.

Brian Cipenga stunned the Three Lions in the 10th minute, capitalising on space inside the penalty area before firing a powerful shot through a narrow gap at the near post to beat England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The goal sent the Congolese supporters into celebration while England’s players and fans were left shell-shocked after conceding so early in the knockout encounter.

Following the breakthrough, England attempted to respond with greater urgency. Djed Spence looked to combine with Noni Madueke down the right flank, but the move was halted as Congo forced the ball out for a throw-in.

Shortly after the goal, play was briefly stopped after two DR Congo players required medical attention following an aerial challenge.

As the match passes the opening stages, DR Congo continue to hold a surprise 1-0 advantage over one of the tournament favourites. The winner of the tie will advance to the Round of 16 to face co-hosts Mexico.
