Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Caleb Yirenkyi emerging as the hero after scoring a stoppage-time winner in Toronto.

Just when the match appeared destined to end in a goalless draw, Yirenkyi struck in the 95th minute to hand the Black Stars a crucial three points and ignite celebrations among Ghanaian supporters.

For much of the contest, clear-cut chances were at a premium as both sides struggled to create meaningful opportunities in what had been a cagey and tactical affair. Ghana enjoyed spells of possession but found it difficult to break down a disciplined Panama defence, while the Central Americans also failed to test the Black Stars consistently.

As the clock ticked into added time, the match looked set to finish without a goal. However, Ghana found a breakthrough deep into stoppage time when Yirenkyi capitalised on a late attacking move to fire home the decisive goal and secure victory for Otto Addo’s side.

The dramatic win gives Ghana a perfect start to their World Cup campaign and places them level on three points with England in Group L. Earlier in the day, England defeated Croatia 4-2 in an entertaining encounter to move to the top of the group.

Ghana’s victory also continues Africa’s encouraging start to the tournament. The Black Stars join Ivory Coast as African nations to have recorded victories, while Morocco, Egypt, Cape Verde and DR Congo have all earned impressive draws against higher-ranked opponents.

The result leaves Panama with work to do in their remaining group-stage fixtures, while Ghana will head into their next match with renewed confidence as they pursue a place in the knockout rounds.

With England and Ghana both on three points after their opening matches, Group L is shaping up to be one of the most competitive groups in the tournament. A meeting between the two sides could prove decisive in determining who finishes top of the group.

For Ghana, however, the immediate focus will be on building momentum after a dramatic victory that may prove crucial in their quest to advance beyond the group stage.
