The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued an apology to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, following a walkout incident at an empowerment event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Friday when a group of women, reportedly loyal to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, protested and left the venue while chanting pro-Fubara slogans. The women demanded to be addressed by Governor Fubara’s wife, Valerie, instead of the wife of the state’s administrator, Mrs. Theresa Ibas.
In a statement released on Saturday, Wike described the incident as “disturbing and embarrassing,” calling it “a show of shame.” He urged Fubara’s supporters to desist from actions that ridicule the state and advised the suspended governor to be transparent about his political intentions.
The empowerment event, part of the Renewed Hope Initiative, aimed to empower 500 women in Rivers State with support items and training. The program is a collaboration between the Office of the First Lady and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals.
