President Bola Tinubu on Thursday convened a high-level meeting with key political figures from Rivers State in a renewed effort to end the protracted political crisis rocking the state.
The closed-door meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, brought together Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and other principal lawmakers from the state.
This marks the first public appearance of Governor Fubara with President Tinubu since the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18. At the time, the president had controversially suspended the governor, his deputy Mrs Ngozi Odu, and the state assembly, citing escalating security challenges and the inability of state actors to cooperate effectively.
However, Thursday’s meeting appears to have ushered in a new chapter of reconciliation. Official photos released after the session showed President Tinubu, Governor Fubara, and Minister Wike smiling in what observers interpret as a symbolic thawing of tensions.
According to sources within the presidency, the deliberations helped bridge the divide among the rival factions, raising hopes for the restoration of stable governance in the oil-rich state.
The political crisis, which has plagued Rivers for several months, had raised alarm among stakeholders concerned about its impact on security, oil production, and democratic stability in the region.
While the full details of the resolutions reached remain under wraps, Thursday’s gathering is being hailed as a significant step toward restoring political harmony in one of Nigeria’s most strategic states.
