Tinubu Cancels June 12 Presidential Broadcast, to Address NASS Instead

President Bola Tinubu has cancelled his scheduled presidential broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day anniversary on June 12.

According to a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the cancellation is due to the President’s scheduled attendance at a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday.

Instead, President Tinubu will deliver his address to the nation during the joint session at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day had earlier announced that the President would address the nation at 7 am on Thursday, followed by the joint session at noon.

Other activities to mark the Democracy Day celebration will proceed as planned, including a public lecture on the theme “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms” at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, at 4 pm.

The Democracy Day celebration marks 26 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, following the end of military rule in 1999. However, critics have raised concerns about the country’s democratic values, with some arguing that Nigeria is sliding into a civilian dictatorship.

The change in the President’s schedule has sparked reactions from Nigerians, with some wondering what the President’s address to the joint session will entail.
