South Africa is in mourning over the death of an Icon, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, an Anti-Apartheid icon. The retired Archbishop and Anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu died at the age of 90.
South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa released a statement regarding the icon’s death. He noted that the death of Desmond Tutu is another chapter of grief in the nations farewell to a generation of notable citizens of the country who have endowed the country to be liberated.
The president affirmed that Desmond Tutu distinguished himself as a “non-sectarian, inclusive champion of universal human rights.”
Desmond Tutu had struggled with ill health in recent years and was often hailed as the country’s moral conscience and the great reconciler of a nation.
The Anti-Apartheid icon Desmond Tutu coined and popularized the term “Rainbow Nation” to describe the country when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first black president.
He was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian known for an anti-apartheid and human rights activist.
