A group of senior members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark, have called on Nigerians to join in building a strong coalition aimed at removing the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in the 2027 general elections.
The leaders made the appeal in Abuja on Monday after a high-level closed-door strategy meeting on the state of the party and the broader political climate in Nigeria.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the group called for the formation of a broad-based coalition driven by democratic values, national unity, economic recovery, enhanced security, and a renewed commitment to fighting corruption.
“Nigerians must come together in defense of democracy. The country needs a credible alternative to the APC’s failed leadership,” the statement read.
PDP Crisis and 2027 Election Strategy
The leaders expressed deep concern over the internal challenges facing the PDP following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election, including the resignation of former national chairman Iyorchia Ayu, lingering internal divisions, and alleged constitutional breaches by the party leadership.
They warned that unless urgent steps are taken to rebuild the party, the PDP risks becoming politically irrelevant. They stressed the importance of formulating strategies that reflect national and local realities to regain voter confidence ahead of 2027.
Accusations Against APC-Led Government
The group also accused the APC-led federal government of weaponizing state institutions to suppress opposition and entrench one-party dominance. They cited:
- Worsening economic conditions,
- Rising insecurity across the country,
- And what they described as a collapse of public trust in government institutions.
According to the communiqué, many elected PDP officials have defected due to threats, pressure, and political patronage from the ruling party, weakening opposition structures nationwide.
Coalition Movement Gains Ground
In attendance were top PDP figures including:
- Former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido
- Former PDP Chairman Uche Secondus
- Former Niger Governor Babangida Aliyu
- Former Ebonyi Governor Sam Egwu
- Former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal
- Former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke
The push aligns with recent efforts by other opposition figures such as Peter Obi (Labour Party), Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi to form a united front for the 2027 elections. Talks are underway to create a viable political platform capable of presenting a formidable challenge to the APC.

The meeting concluded with a call for urgent reforms within the PDP and collective political action among opposition stakeholders to restore credibility, stability, and effective leadership in Nigeria.
