LOS ANGELES — Co-hosts Canada became the first nation to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa.

The Round of 32 encounter appeared destined for extra time after South Africa produced a resilient defensive display to frustrate the hosts throughout the contest. However, Eustaquio broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute, controlling the ball inside the penalty area before firing a composed half-volley into the far corner beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The victory sends Canada into the last 16, where Jesse Marsch’s side will face either Morocco or the Netherlands on July 4 in Houston.

Canada dominated possession and created the better opportunities but found South Africa difficult to break down. Defender Moise Bombito came closest in the opening half when his powerful header was cleared off the goal line by Aubrey Modiba, denying the Canadians a deserved lead.

South Africa continued to defend bravely after the break. Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced a superb last-ditch tackle to prevent Jonathan David from converting after Ronwen Williams had initially saved Tani Oluwaseyi’s effort.

Canada also appealed for a penalty shortly before halftime when Richie Laryea went down inside the box following a challenge from Khuliso Mudau. After a VAR review, officials upheld the on-field decision, ruling that Mudau had made contact with the ball before bringing down the defender.

The decision sparked frustration from Canada head coach Jesse Marsch, who had to be restrained by his players as he confronted the match officials heading into the tunnel.

Despite the setback, Canada maintained their attacking pressure in the second half. Their persistence was finally rewarded deep into stoppage time when Eustaquio produced the decisive moment, sending home supporters into celebration and sealing Canada’s historic progression.

Following the final whistle, an emotional Marsch praised his players for their determination.

“You guys showed your character. You guys are Canadian heroes now. Canadian heroes, for the future children of this country,” Marsch told his squad after the match.

“This sport has a big future because of you guys. You should be so proud of who you are because of this game.”

Eustaquio delivered an outstanding individual performance throughout the contest. The midfielder consistently threatened South Africa from set-pieces, creating multiple scoring opportunities before capping his display with the winning goal that secured Canada’s place in the knockout stage.

For South Africa, it was a heartbreaking end to an otherwise disciplined defensive performance. Hugo Broos’ men defended resolutely for more than 90 minutes but were unable to hold off Canada’s relentless pressure until the final whistle.

Canada now shift their attention to Houston, where they will attempt to continue their impressive World Cup campaign against either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16.
