UBA Bank Denies Involvement of Tony Elumelu in Dele Farotimi’s Arrest
The United Bank for Africa (UBA) denied allegations linking its chairman, Tony Elumelu, to the arrest of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi by Nigerian police in Lagos. Farotimi’s arrest, prompted by a defamation petition, has led to public outrage and condemnation from civil rights organizations demanding his release and an end to police oppression.
The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has come out to deny any involvement of its chairman, Tony Elumelu, in the arrest of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, by the Nigerian police in Lagos.
According to SaharaReporters, Farotimi was arrested at Zone 2 in Lagos following an alleged petition filed by Tony Elumelu. However, a top source in the bank has refuted this claim, stating that “Tony Elumelu has no hand in Dele’s arrest”.
Farotimi had raised concerns about threats to his life by some Nigerian elites in collusion with security agencies and legal experts. He was invited to the Zone 2 Police Command, where he was presented with a petition accusing him of defamation. Despite finding the petition baseless, Farotimi addressed its content.
The arrest has sparked outrage, with many Nigerian and civil rights organisations condemning the arrest and demanding Farotimi’s immediate release. They have also called on the Nigerian police to stop being used as an instrument of oppression on behalf of the rich.
