Gunmen attack army checkpoint in Abia
Tragedy struck in Abia State, Nigeria, as gunmen attacked an army checkpoint in Ekenobizi, a border community between Abia and Imo states, killing two soldiers. The incident occurred around 6:18 am on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA, the attack was carried out by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The gunmen, who arrived in a white Lexus (350/400) model, were repelled by the troops, forcing them to retreat with gunshot wounds. However, in the ensuing firefight, two soldiers lost their lives.
The Joint Task Force has appealed to residents of the South East, particularly those in Abia State, to provide credible information to help track down the fleeing attackers and combat criminal elements in the region.
The force has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property in line with global best practices and the rules of engagement.
