‘There’s nothing wrong with his attitude’ — Angelique Kidjo To Burna Boy’s critics

Angelique Kidjo, Grammy-winning Beninese singer-songwriter, has taken a swipe at those who criticise Burna Boy over his personality.

The 60-year-old songstress spoke about her music career as well as people’s perception of the ‘African Giant’ crooner during a recent interview with Smooth FM Lagos

Burna Boy has been the subject of heated argument on numerous occasions as his critics often fault his seemingly “unapologetic nature” to issues.

But during the interview, Kidjo said criticisms of the ‘Ye’ singer are often baseless, noting that people should not be attacked for standing their ground on issues.

The Beninese music star said the ‘Wonderful’ singer would not have been criticised in similar manner if he were to be an African-American.

“That’s the way to to do it (referring to Burna Boy’s attitude), because he knows what he is talking about. When you’re talented, yes, you have to have humility but that doesn’t mean you’re going to walk on yourself and apologise,” she said.

“For what? I’m good at what I do. You don’t like it? Sorry! If it was an African-American person having that attitude, nobody would say anything.

“That’s my boy mehn! Let him do his stuff. If you don’t like it, sorry for you… You leave my boy alone!”

With numerous awards and recognition, Kidjo and Burna have pulled their weight in the global music landscape.

Both singers have won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammys, with Burna Boy initially losing to the Beninoise music star in 2020.

The pair also recently collaborated on a song on ‘Mother Nature’, Kidjo’s latest album.
