Emir of Kano calls for urgent action to combat increasing drug abuse among youth and women

His Royal Highness, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, received Ambassador Maryam Hassan, President of the Anti-Drug Abuse Group, at his palace. During the visit, the Emir expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in drug abuse, particularly among women and young people.

Addressing the issue, the Emir stated, “Certain tragic actions, such as individuals harming their family members, often occur under the influence of drugs, leading to a loss of sanity.” He urged intensified efforts to raise awareness in the community about the devastating effects of drug addiction.

Ambassador Maryam Hassan highlighted the organization’s commitment to fighting drug abuse, particularly among youth and women. She informed the Emir about ongoing initiatives, including workshops for teachers and traditional leaders to increase awareness. She also shared plans to push for the approval of a proposed anti-drug abuse bill in the National Assembly, requesting the Emirate’s support to ensure its passage.

Additionally, His Royal Highness appointed Muhammad Murtala Safiyanu as the new District Head of Kutama in Gwarzo Local Government Area.
