Nigerian Music Legend Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72

Veteran singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has died at the age of 72. According to reports, she slumped after performing at an event at Banana Island, Lagos, on Tuesday night and was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island.

Onwenu was a pioneer of Nigerian music, releasing her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981. She had a successful music career spanning several decades and also acted in numerous Nollywood films.

The legendary artist was also involved in politics, serving as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian society were recognized with several awards, including the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

Her death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with tributes pouring in from fans and fellow artists.
