NAFDAC Shuts Down 150 Shops in Abia Market Over ₦5bn Worth of Fake, Expired Products
NAFDAC has shut down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, after uncovering a large-scale operation producing and distributing fake and expired goods worth a staggering ₦5 billion. The items seized included beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items like noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt.
This isn’t the first time NAFDAC has cracked down on counterfeiters in Abia State. In December 2023, the agency shut down 240 shops at Cemetery Road Market in Aba, confiscating counterfeit drugs and products valued at over ₦700 million ¹.
The Director of NAFDAC’s South-East Zone, Martins Iluyomade, expressed disappointment that the market continued to harbor counterfeiters, despite a previous agreement to expose them. NAFDAC’s DG, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy and commitment to safeguarding public health.
It’s clear that NAFDAC is serious about tackling the issue of counterfeit products in Nigeria, and this latest shutdown is a significant step in that direction.
