Labour Issues Final Ultimatum to Abia State Government, Commences Indefinite Strike July 15

The organized labour in Abia State has issued a final ultimatum to the state government, threatening to embark on an indefinite strike from Monday, July 15, 2024, over the non-payment of the N30,000 minimum wage and N35,000 palliative award.

Despite Governor Alex Otti’s promises to pay new wages once the Federal government concludes its negotiation with the organized labour, the workers have decided to take drastic action. In a letter dated July 8, 2024, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) chairmen, Okoro Ogbonnaya and Enogwe Ihechi, respectively, notified the Governor of the impending strike.

The letter, which was written to the Governor through his Chief of Staff, stated that the 14-day ultimatum earlier given to the state government had expired without any meaningful response. The organized labour has, therefore, decided to take matters into their own hands and proceed on an indefinite strike.

According to the letter, the decision to go on strike is in line with the national directive concerning the alleged non-compliance of the Abia State government. The workers have vowed to remain on strike until their demands are met, and the state government takes concrete steps to address their grievances.

The strike action is set to commence on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 00hr, and will affect all workers in the state, including those in the public and private sectors. This development is likely to have far-reaching consequences for the state’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.
