Kenneth Okonkwo Slams Labour Party Leadership, Threatens to Defect
Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent member of the Labour Party (LP) and ally of Peter Obi, has expressed his disappointment and frustration with the party’s leadership, describing them as “clowns” and a “secret society” .
Mr Okonkwo, who served as the party’s presidential campaign spokesperson in the 2023 election, criticized the party’s inability to hold a successful national convention and its lack of integrity.
Okonkwo’s comments come amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the LP, which has seen a faction of the party led by Lamidi Apapa declare itself the acting national leadership. The crisis has led to the suspension of several party officials, including Apapa, and has raised concerns about the party’s ability to govern effectively.
Okonkwo’s criticism of the party leadership is significant, given his close relationship with Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. Okonkwo’s comments suggest that there may be divisions within the party, and that some members are unhappy with the current leadership.

The LP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since Lamidi Apapa, deputy national chairman of the party (south), declared himself the acting national chairman last year. The crisis deepened in 2024 when a national convention of the party in Anambra saw Julius Abure re-elected as chairman of the party amid opposition from a faction of the party.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not monitor the LP’s national convention, and the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party described the convention that re-elected Abure as a charade.
Okonkwo’s comments are a significant blow to the LP, which has been struggling to maintain unity and stability in the face of the ongoing crisis. The party’s inability to hold a successful national convention and its lack of integrity have raised concerns about its ability to govern effectively .
