Homes Submerged, As Popular Trademore Estate In Abuja Hit By Severe Flooding

The flood in Trademore Estate, Abuja, did not result in any loss of life.

• 116 houses were affected by the flood.
• The estate was previously declared a disaster zone in 2023, and a court injunction prevents FCTA from removing the structures.
• A primary school with 500 pupils is in danger due to the flood.

The Trademore Estate in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has been submerged by floodwaters following an early Monday morning downpour.

The estate’s gate area has been particularly affected, with the floodwaters destroying several homes and businesses.

Trademore Estate has experienced flooding annually, with residents blaming the lack of drainage channels in the area.

In a video circulating on social media, a woman can be heard pleading with the federal government to intervene and provide assistance.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had predicted thundery and rainy weather conditions from Sunday to Tuesday across the country.

The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has placed its emergency teams on alert and has taken mitigative measures around the capital city.

The agency has also appealed to residents to use the 112-emergency toll-free number in case of any emergency.

The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) had announced plans to demolish structures on waterways in the estate and other estates across the FCT, but residents had opposed the move.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed a team to the scene, and the FCT Administration has built a bridge to enable people to cross the water.
