CONYSSA Director-General Slams Police Over Peace Corps Commandant’s Arrest

Ambassador Ademario Emmanuel, Director-General of the Coalition of Nigeria Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA), has strongly condemned the recent arrest of Peace Corps National Commandant, Dr. Dickson Akoh, and personnel, citing an ongoing court case.

Emmanuel praised Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun for his efforts, noting that Nigerians’ relative peace is due to citizen cooperation. He emphasized the need for police cooperation over intimidation, highlighting that the IGP’s good work is being undermined by rogue officers.

Emmanuel questioned the necessity of victimizing and intimidating innocent people before the court judgment is rendered. He urged the police to adopt a cooperative approach, rather than creating unnecessary tension.

Specifically, Emmanuel demanded the immediate release of all young persons arrested at the Peace Corps office, condemning the practice of weekend arrests and prolonged detention until Monday.

He underscored the importance of respecting the judicial process and avoiding heavy-handed or intimidating actions. And that the police must prioritize cooperation and de-escalation techniques to maintain public trust and ensure justice is served.
