BONA NAIJAThe Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new president.
Piwuna, who also serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
His election was confirmed during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held in Benin City on Sunday. Piwuna emerged victorious over Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, according to reliable sources.
His leadership begins at a critical time for the union, amid rising tensions over the sharing formula for Earned Academic Allowances recently disbursed by the Federal Government, ongoing concerns over brain drain, and the looming threat of another industrial action.
