APC, PDP Clash in Rivers State Over Inspection of Electoral Materials
The Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was overwhelmed with gunshots and teargas today as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demanded a joint inspection of the governorship electoral materials with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
BONA NAIJA Learnt that the APC secretariat was encircled by security officers in a bid to protect the governor-elect of the state, Tonye Cole, from the protesting PDP supporters.
The PDP protest was led by the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Edison Ehie, who was re-elected in the March 18 election.
“Don’t allow other political parties — be it APC, Labour Party, or APGA — to inspect the electoral materials without us. Any inspection must be done in our presence and in the presence of other political parties. We have refused to accept defeat,” Ehie said.
The protesters also demanded that INEC make available the true copies of the result sheets for inspection.
Toye, however, noted that the “PDP organised thugs everywhere to prevent us from getting to INEC’s office”.
“They had barricaded the road from GRA junction,” he said. “They were shooting at the APC secretariat.”
